Here’s the new Audi S3 prototype. Unusually for a new model preview, Audi chose to show off the hot version first.
Since this is only a prototype we don’t have too many specific details to its performance except to say that it’s all looking very familiar on paper at least.
It uses the same MQB platform as the outgoing car, shared with the Golf R, and appears to have the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering the same 306bhp and 295lb ft of torque.
So what’s new?
Sebastien Straasser, Audi engineer stated to Autocar “We now have central dynamic control for systems including the dampers, quattro all-wheel drive and torque vectoring by braking. Now they all have the same information. For example, they will all know if the car is understeering and all act the same to counter it. When they were decentralised, one didn’t know what the other was doing.”
So expect a more cohesive experience between the quattro four-wheel drive, progressive steering, damper technology and Audi’s select mode.
No pictures of the interior are available until the A3 is revealed at Geneva. But expect touch screens and virtual cockpits everywhere and few actually switches, so stock up on glass cleaner and microfibre cloths.
